The Name of Rueben

April 11, 2022

The first son of Jacob was named Rueben. In Hebrew, the name means “I see a son!” or “Behold a son!” The first tribe of Israel is a prophetic statement for all Jews to recognize Jesus as the Son of God who will bring their nation into right relationship with Yahweh.

As we study the Old Testament we will discover some amazing scriptures that will cause us to exclaim, “I see a son!” Unfortunately many Jews who love the Old Testament have been blinded to the idea that there is another power in heaven named Jesus.

Historically, Jewish scholars but failed to acknowledge Jesus as the rightful Heir to the throne of Yahweh. Solomon wrote in Proverbs 30:4 a question about his God: “What is his name and the name of his son?”

Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Whose hands have gathered up the wind? Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know! (Proverbs 30:4)

Many early rabbis even claimed Yahweh was angry with Solomon because of what he wrote in Proverbs 30:4. They claimed God said to Solomon, “Why do express a thing that concerns the sanctification of my name with by an obscure allusion.?” Why would Solomon make a reference to the name of the son of the One who controls nature? Was Solomon alluding to a Son who would soon sit on the throne of His Father?

This mystery unfolds throughout the Old Testament of the coming Son of Yahweh. There is a second power in heaven and His name is Jesus. The Hebraic Scriptures point to a future where Yahweh appoints a Son to the throne–not just a man like you and I, but one who is like His Father in every way.
